Operating Model
The ‘Operating Model’ is an organisation’s ways of working. It is the confluence of the organisation’s people and capabilities, processes and technologies to develop and deliver the product or services of the company.
As organisations are driven to increase customer service, decrease costs, and meet new regulatory requirements, many consider the effectiveness of their current operating model. This often leads to the design of a ‘target’ operating model and a transformation programme to implement it.
Yare helps our clients who are reviewing their current Operating Model or developing a Target Operating Model address the common challenges by:
- identifying whether there is a “problem to be solved”
- defining what that problem is in clear business language
- bringing the stakeholder group along with that process
- turning the dream (target operating model) in to reality. Taking it off the PowerPoint slides and making a real, positive, impact to the business ad customers. Implementation planning and execution (synchronised process, people and technology change)
- dealing with the challenge of iterating the design before you have finished implementation.
The Yare team uses the Yare Operating Model Method™ as a guide for assessing current operating model and designing target operating models. We use the word ‘guide’ deliberately because the Yare tools will bring structure and quicken the pace of the work but we recognise that all organisations are unique in their design and operations. It is used most effectively when brought together with the detailed understanding you have of your business.
Although the design of the operating model is likely to continue well into the implementation, particularly as the technology development and detailed process detail level, it is crucial to formally sign off the design and signal the start of the implementation. Too often, this critical shift is not managed and the stages of delivery – that often require different skills sets and techniques – blur together to negative effect.
